You do! You choose one driver from your group, who is at least 18 years of age. This is the same person who signs the rental agreement form.

The rental session is for 2 hours. Note that because we have set booking times there is a strict $100 fee if you return the boat more than 15 minutes late.

Can we go anywhere on the lake?

No, sorry! Conditions on Lake Taupo can change dramatically so we need to keep you close to shore for your own safety. You’re permitted to cruise freely within the designated boundaries as seen in the picture. The boundaries are highlighted in green. The rental time frame gives you enough time and battery power to cruise to Acacia Bay or Two Mile Bay and back in calm weather conditions.

Are there any age restrictions for children?

No, there are not any age restrictions. The only restriction is that every passenger must wear a life jacket. When booking you will be able to reserve a life jacket for infants to children according to their weight. As long as a life jacket is available for their size, they are permitted to board.

How do I reserve the boat for a specific day and time?

Click ‘BOOK NOW’ on our website and our booking site will pop up. There you will see what sessions are available for you to book.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELATION POLICY?

Cancelations may be made up to 48 hours out from the time of the reservation for a full refund. 50% of the booking cost is refunded between 48-24 hours, and no refund is given less than 24 hours out from the reservation.

Do we get a refund if the weather is bad or the lake is too choppy?

YES! If the conditions are not suitable for Doughboats to operate you will receive a full refund.

What about boat safety?

Our boats have all the required safety equipment on board. Everyone must wear a life jacket. We have sleek ones for adults, so you’ll likely forget you are even wearing it. The safety equipment also includes a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, waterproof VHF radio, and a bailer. You will be cruising along the shoreline of Lake Taupo, close to the town centre, so you should have cell phone service. But in case you don’t, you can reach us and emergency services on the VHF radio.

What is the boat made of?

Our boats are made out of low density polyethylene. They’re extremely strong, sturdy, and buoyant. Even when the boat is filled up with water it does not sink!

Does the boat have a motor?

Yes. Our boats are powered by the Spirit 1.0 ePropulsion outboard. These electric outboards are eco friendly and as quiet as can be.

How fast does the boat go?

Our battery powered outboards can go up to 5 knots (9 kph).

Can i bring food?

Of course! Bring a chilly bin (cooler/esky/cool box/cool bag…) loaded up with all your favorite eats!

You may also place an order with Greedy Pizza and they’ll deliver to our berth at the time of your booking. See this page for more details.

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

No, we encourage you to use the restroom before going out on Doughboats. However, on the map that you’ll receive we have marked a couple bathrooms on shore. But the bathrooms will not always be accessible depending on the wind direction and the direction that our staff sends you on the lake. So do not count on being able to access these bathrooms on your cruise.

Can we bring a Service dog or Therapy dog on the boat?

As long as you can assure us our dog will not need to potty while out on the boat, dogs are permitted!
